Our wood of choice is Ontario’s own Eastern White Pine; renowned for its combined benefits of strength, stability, insulation value, and rot resistance.This is the same wood species our ancient ancestors chose as their medium for beautifully-crafted structures in Scandinavia: many of which have been preserved and are still functional after a millennium!
However, we recognize that different types of wood offer different qualities and characteristics, Davidson is open to using other species of tree when constructing your log house. Ontario is blessed with forests full of North America’s finest wood for handcrafting – white and red pine and hemlock. Yellow pine, fir, spruce, and cedar are often readily available from other parts of the country. However, sometimes clients are captivated by a kind of wood not found in Canada. In these cases, we will go as far as needed to acquire the choice of wood they prefer. But whether found locally, or afar, Davidson ensures that all logs used in our handcrafted homes always meet our high standards of excellence.
All log and timber home owners are nature lovers. But there are some elements found in nature best left outside. That’s why Davidson goes to great lengths to prevent air, moisture, light, noise, and insects from penetrating the walls of your home. All of our logs are sealed with the highest-quality foam gaskets available. Made of closed-cell materials, these gaskets prevent moisture absorption and air infiltration. They also have superior recovery characteristics and provide a perpetual seal during the drying and settling period that normally happens within the first 5-7 years.
